M4: Road still closed between junctions 13 and 14 after spillage
At around 2am on Wednesday morning, the vehicle collided with the middle motorway barrier between junctions 13, Newbury, and 14, Hungerford. This caused a closure of all three westbound lanes and delays of around 30 minutes with congestion spanning two miles. Since then, National Highways has been working well into the evening to clean up the crash and repair the road as the surface was substantially damaged.
Approximately 150 meters of the road surface needs to be resurfaced and 50 lengths of barrier repairs are also necessary. Adrian Beare, National Highways operations manager, said: “We apologise to road users for the inconvenience caused. The work on the central reservation and the resurfacing will take place before the rush hour and hope to open all lanes by the evening.”
“We advised drivers to seek for an alternative road.”
While it was hoped that the work might be completed on Wednesday evening, the latest update from the traffic organisation, posted at 9pm, suggests it will continue well into the early hours of Thursday morning.
There has been no further update since.
