M4 traffic live: Serious multi-vehicle crash closes motorway in both directions

A stretch of the M4 has been closed in both directions following a serious collision. Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports that a lorry collided with a car soon after 5am this morning, Monday, December 4. The incident happened between J22 (M49) and J21 (M48).

Emergency crews are on the scene and drivers should avoid the area. Diversions are in place. A Highways England spokesperson said: “The M4 is CLOSED eastbound between J22 #M49 and J21 #M48 due to a multi-vehicle collision.

Emergency services are on scene. More info to follow.” Local authorities have confirmed that the westbound carriageway has also been closed.

Motorists are being directed off the motorway at J22 to take the 2nd exit onto the M49 southbound. Traffic[1] monitoring site Inrix says: “M4 eastbound closed, queueing traffic due to accident, a car and a lorry involved from J22 M49 to J21 M48..”
