M57 update on driver of lorry after crash

Emergency services have issued an update on a lorry driver, whose vehicle left the M57 carriageway and crashed into a number of trees. Merseyside Police were called to the motorway’s northbound carriageway just after 4.30pm on Thursday, December 28, following reports of a crash. Once officers arrived at junction four, they found a lorry had left the carriageway, crossed the hard shoulder and crashed into a number of trees.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service were also called to the scene. Merseyside Police said the driver of the lorry was still in the vehicle in a statement received by The ECHO at 5.30pm.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed after they sent two fire engines to the scene, the driver was “conscious and breathing”.

A spokesperson from the service said: “Crews were alerted at 4.42pm and on scene shortly after. Two fire engines and the search and rescue team attended. “On arrival, crews found one heavy goods vehicle which had come off the carriageway.

The vehicle was upright and on all four wheels. “The occupant of the vehicle was conscious and breathing and had a precautionary check from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS). The incident was handed over to Merseyside Police and MFRS left the scene at 5.10pm.”

The M57 was completely closed heading towards Switch Island while emergency services responded to the incident. At around 6.30pm two lanes of traffic were able to open as the fire and ambulance services left the scene. A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: “At around 4.30pm this afternoon (Thursday 28 December) we received a report of a collision on junction 4 of the M57 involving a lorry that collided into some trees.

The driver of the lorry is believed to be inside the vehicle. “Motorists are advised to avoid the area. If you have any information on this incident, please contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting log 633 of Thursday December.”
