Man, 70, dies and five others are injured after horror four car pile-up on A66 slip road

A 70-year-old man has died and five others are injured after a horror car crash involving four vehicles.

The pile-up took place on the A66 slip road near the Hartington Interchange in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, just before 8.40am on Wednesday.

The road was closed for several hours as police, fire and ambulance crews – including an air ambulance – rushed to the scene to try and save the man.

Cleveland Police has now confirmed that a 70-year-old man – who was travelling in a white Mercedes Sprinter van with a 44-year-old male – tragically died following a medical episode. The passenger suffered a sprained ankle.

Both men were from outside the Teesside area.

Four others were also injured – with a blue Toyota Corolla taxi, white Peugeot 208, and black Audi A1 all involved in the crash.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: ‘A 70-year-old man has sadly passed away following a medical episode which led to a four-vehicle collision on the A66 Hartington slip lane, yesterday morning (Wednesday 6th December).

‘The road was closed for several hours following the collision at 8:40am, whilst medical teams worked to try to save the man’s life.

‘The 44-year-old man travelling with the 70-year-old man in the white Mercedes Sprinter van, suffered a sprained ankle. Both men were from outside of the Teesside area.

‘The driver of a blue Toyota Corolla taxi, a 22-year-old man, and his passenger, a 55-year-old woman, both sustained minor injuries.

‘The driver of a white Peugeot 208, an 18-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old woman driving a black Audi A1 also suffered minor injuries.’

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: ‘Cleveland Fire Brigade were called on December 6 at 08:38am to a Road Traffic Collision (RTC) on A66 east bound, A178 slip road, Hartington interchange Middlesbrough.

‘Four fire engines in attendance from Middlesbrough, Stockton and Thornaby.

Four vehicle RTC. Police and NEAS were in attendance. One casualty was extricated by crews and handed over to NEAS.

We had left the scene by 09.47am.’

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We received a call at 8.38am this morning (Wednesday 6 December) to reports of a road traffic incident on the A66 in Middlesbrough.

‘We dispatched three ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical leader, and requested the support of our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended via air.

‘Three patients were transported by road to The James Cook University Hospital for further treatment.
