Man dies and five injured after four-vehicle crash on A66 sliproad sparks major 999 response
A man has died and five people left injured following a crash on the A66 in Middlesbrough. Police, fire, and ambulance crews, including an air ambulance, were called to the A66 sliproad[1], near the Hartington Interchange, on Wednesday after a four-vehicle crash. Motorists were told to avoid the area as the road was closed off by authorities – with the air ambulance landing at the nearby industrial estate.
Cleveland Police has now confirmed that a 70-year-old man, from outside the Teesside region, sadly died following a medical episode. Five others were injured[2] during the ordeal – with a blue Toyota Corolla taxi, white Peugeot 208, and black Audi A1 also all being involved in the crash. A 44-year-old man, who was travelling with the man that died, suffered a sprained ankle. The driver of the taxi – a 22-year-old man – and his passenger – a 55-year-old woman – both sustained minor injuries.
The driver of a white Peugeot 208, an 18-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old woman driving a black Audi A1 suffered minor injuries. Fire crews sent four engines to the scene and freed one person[3] before handing them over to the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), which took three people by road to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

The road was closed for several hours following the 8:40am crash, whilst medical teams worked to try to save the man’s life. A cordon was erected by fire crews while drivers faced lengthy delays along the major route – with traffic reportedly queuing as far back as the Teesside Park turnoff.
A NEAS spokesperson said: “We received a call at 8.38am this morning (Wednesday 6 December) to reports of a road traffic incident on the A66[4] in Middlesbrough[5]. “We dispatched three ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical leader, and requested the support of our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended via air. Three patients were transported by road to The James Cook University Hospital[6] for further treatment.”
A Cleveland Fire Brigade[7] spokesperson said: “Cleveland Fire Brigade was called on December 6 at 8:38am to a road traffic collision (RTC) on A66 eastbound, A178 slip road, Hartington Interchange, Middlesbrough.
