Man drowns in 15ft pond in Otteri after rescuing son caught in sludge

Chennai: A 35-year-old man drowned after rescuing his 12-year-old son who was caught in sludge in a 15-foot-deep pond in Otteri on Friday evening.Police said Ilayarajah, a daily wage worker, and his son, Sai Krishnan, studying in Class VII at a government school in the locality, sneaked into the State Bank of India training centre near the Stephenson Road flyover in Otteri.Upon nearing the pond brimming after the rain caused by cyclone Michaung, Ilayarajah sent his son to catch fish. Noticing that the boy was caught in the sludge, Ilayarajah ran into the water and threw his son towards the land.However, Ilayarajah got trapped in the sludge and drowned in front of his helpless son.Sai Krishnan ran home and informed his mother Geethanjali, 27, about the incident. She informed the police who rushed to the spot.A team led by the assistant commissioner of police B Alagesan visited the place and a team from Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services entered the pond and recovered Ilayarajah’s body.The body was sent to the Government Stanley Hospital for autopsy.

The occupants of the car, a middle-aged couple and their son, suffered grievous injuries.

Tragically, the couple did not survive, while their son remains in critical condition.

The bus driver, who was not intoxicated, has been charged with negligence.[3]
