Man in car crash leaps out of ambulance and attacks police
A man who had just suffered a head injury in a car crash leaped out of an ambulance and attacked two police officers. Callum Grant, 37, blamed his head injury for the unprovoked assault, for which he said he had no other explanation. He was being treated by East Midlands Ambulance Service[1] in Church Hill, Scraptoft, Leicester, at about 5pm on Friday, November 3, when the incident happened.
He shoved the first officer hard in the chest with both hands and then grabbed a police constable by her stab vest before pushing her into a stationary car. He was arrested and interviewed by Leicestershire Police[2] officers but refused to comment. At Leicester Magistrates’ Court[3] on Monday he pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting an emergency worker.
The court heard that Grant, of Partridge Close, Syston[5], had 14 previous offences on his record and had been jailed for burglary earlier this year. Mike Diez, representing Grant, said his client had been homeless since his release and had been struggling with his mental health. He said: “He’s very sorry for his reaction during this incident.
He’s not able to give much explanation – he’d had a bang to the head and was bleeding and wasn’t thinking clearly.” Mr Diez said Grant had been trying to check on the condition of the driver of the car he had been in, who was in police custody at the scene when the attack happened. He said: “He wanted to see how his friend was and the police were resistant to that.”
He said his client was currently living with his ex-partner and their children and working as a roofer.
Grant was given a 12-month community order and that will include 270 hours of unpaid work.
He was also ordered to pay GBP50 each in compensation to the two police officers, as well as GBP85 court costs and a GBP114 victim surcharge.
