Man killed in M4 incident that closed motorway for 17 hours

A man has died after being struck by multiple vehicles on the M4 in Wiltshire. The incident happened at around 6.30pm on Saturday[1] (December 9) and caused a full motorway closure until around 11.30am on Sunday. Wiltshire police said they had received a report of a pedestrian in the carriageway at the roundabout of junction 16 for Royal Wootton Bassett.

The man, who was in his 50s, then entered the motorway on the eastbound carriageway on foot and was struck by passing vehicles. Police said he was declared dead at the scene. His next of kin has been informed.

Emergency services had been called to the scene on Saturday evening and motorists were warned that the full motorway closure would last into Sunday. Diversions were put in place while investigation work continues. Wiltshire police said on Sunday: “Both carriageways have now reopened.
