Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana disagrees with ‘arrogant’ Virgil van Dijk dig

Manchester United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana insisted his team went to Anfield in search of a win after the goalless draw against Liverpool[1] on Sunday. The comments appear to be in complete contrast to Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk’s post-match verdict after the Dutchman had claimed “there was only one team trying to win the game”. Van Dijk’s comments sparked a furious response from United legend Roy Keane, who accused the Liverpool defender of being ‘arrogant’.[2][3]

After the final whistle to Sunday’s Premier League[4] encounter, Van Dijk told Sky Sports: “If you see how we played the game, we had most of the ball and created some opportunities. There was only one team trying to win the game.” ALSO READ: Sir Jim Ratcliffe is already planning something Gary Neville will love at Manchester United[6]

Van Dijk also expressed his frustration: “We want to win every game of course and that is why it is frustrating. Sometimes we shot too easy and could have passed on the overlap. The right decision was sometimes lacking.

We carry on of course but it is frustrating because we were superior in all aspects.” He added: “In the end they are buzzing with a point and we are disappointed with a point. Obviously they are not in the best phase.

Coming here you are wary of the threat we have. We should have won it today. We have to learn from certain situations and I know we will.”

Speaking to beIN Sports, he said: “Not bad, it could be better because we came here to win,” and “We are Manchester United[7].” Despite not achieving the result they wanted, Onana[8] remained positive, stating: “We didn’t have the result we wanted so we have to keep fighting. Playing for such a big club, you have a big responsibility to try and win every game.

We unfortunately didn’t win, but we will keep our head up and look forward to the coming games.” He added: “Of course. We are Manchester United.

Why would we start to play the game if you don’t want to win? It’s better if we stay at Carrington (the training ground). If you come here, it is to win.

It doesn’t matter who we play, we are one of the best clubs in the world.” When Keane heard Van Dijk’s remarks, he responded sharply: “Obviously some arrogance coming out of him dissing United like that. He needs to be reminded himself, he’s playing for a team that’s only won one title in 30-odd years.”

“He said only one team wanted to win, Man United are buzzing with the point. Man United are in a difficult place, like Liverpool have been in a difficult place for many a year. So maybe that bit of arrogance backfired on him today.”
