Man’s lucky escape as car lands in ditch after overshooting Hessle Road roundabout
Shocking photographs have shown the wake of destruction left by a car that drove straight over a Hull roundabout and into a ditch. In the images, tyre tracks are seen going over the roundabout on Hessle Road[1] near Sainsbury’s in west Hull after the crash in the early hours of Monday. Photographs taken the next day show the car upside-down in the ditch submerged with water.
Bits of fence and brick wall are strewn across the area. The fire service rescued the driver and Humberside Police[2] said a man was reported for suspected drink-driving offences. Humberside Fire & Rescue[3] reported the crash in its fire log which dated it at 1.20am on Monday, December 11.
It read: “Single vehicle Road Traffic Collision involving car into fence and landing in ditch. Fire service used spreaders to prize door open and manually extricate driver from vehicle. “Adult male conveyed to hospital for precautionary check up.
Incident left with Police.”

Worried about the risk of pollution from the car, a resident told Hull Live: “I was walking to Sainsbury’s on Monday and saw this car upside down in the drain. I walked past again today and the car is still there. Very concerning!”
The resident claimed the car has been “leaking fuel and oil into the drain” and was also fearful about damage the car caused to the wall it crashed through. “This wall is our only flood defence,” he said. He said he had serious concerns about traffic[4] safety in the area and added: “I have told the police and written letters that speed checks or speed bumps should be a priority to slow people down – lots of kids and pensioners use Sainsbury’s daily.” A spokesperson for Humberside Police told Hull Live: “Officers were in attendance Hessle Road in Hull following reports of a road traffic collision at 1.20am on Monday 11 December.
“A car is reported to have collided within a wall before coming to a stop in a nearby drain. Whilst thankfully nobody sustained serious injuries, a 36-year-old man has since been reported for drink driving offences.”
