Met Office issues ‘danger to life’ weather warning with 80mph winds

The Met Office[1] has issued a yellow 24-hour weather warning for Yorkshire with high winds reaching up 80mph. Forecasters say there is also a danger to life. The entire Yorkshire region has been completely blanketed by the yellow weather warning for wind[2] which is in place from Midnight on Thursday morning up until 11.59pm on Thursday evening.

High winds are expected to hit, potentially causing some travel disruption to both roads and rail travel, a chance of power cuts and a danger to life. The warning covers the whole of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England. The Met Office weather prediction for Yorkshire on Thursday says: "Remaining unsettled with strong and gusty winds continuing through the period, bringing showers initially, and then perhaps more persistent rain into the weekend.

Staying mild." Here's what the Met Office says[4] we can expect as the yellow weather warning for wind comes into force:

  • There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected

  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs

  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage

  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

  • There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris

  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close
