Michigan[3] State University point guard Jeremy Fears was shot in the leg near his hometown of Joliet, Illinois[4], according to Detroit Free Press reporter Chris Solari[5].

The injury is not considered life threatening.

MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo told Solari, 'Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting comfortably.

'While there is much we still don't know, my focus is supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.'

A message left by DailyMail.com to the Joliet Police Department for more information was not immediately returned.

Fears has played in all 12 of Michigan State's games this season - averaging 3.5 points, 3.3 assists, 1.9 rebounds, and 0.8 steals per game.

In the final game played before MSU went on Christmas break, he managed a career high ten assists while also bagging five rebounds in a 99-55 win over Stony Brook.

Fears committed to the Spartans as a five-star recruit and was rated the 27th best player in the country, second-best player in Illinois, and the ninth-best point guard in the class of 2023 by ESPN.

Michigan State's next game is on December 30 against Indiana State.
