Midlands roads where most drivers snared by average speed cameras this year

The Midlands roads where most drivers were caught out speeding by average speed cameras in 2023 have been revealed. Thousands of motorists got into trouble after being clocked by cameras fitted on a number of main roads across Birmingham and the Black Country.[1][2] Average speed cameras have been rolled out over the last few years in the region and drivers continue to get caught in large numbers.

The location where most drivers were snapped this year was the A4148 Broadway North in Walsall[3], heading southbound between Persehouse Street and Princes Avenue. Nearly 3,000 have been caught speeding there since the start of the year – as well as another 762 in the opposite direction. Other hotspots include the A4444 Black Country Route at Wednesbury[4] (2,540) and the A34 Birmingham Road in Great Barr[5] (1,837).

It comes as police chiefs push to put more speed cameras on West Midlands roads.

Senior officers are keen to widen the rollout of cameras, insisting too many drivers still get away with speeding on roads which are largely unmonitored.

New ‘intelligent’ digital speed cameras are being fitted in Staffordshire[11] and it remains to be seen if the same thing will happen in the West Midlands.

Further cameras are likely to hinge on police chiefs securing specific funds.
