Motorist arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving after A171 crash claimed life of Teessider

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal crash on the A171. Emergency services attended the incident in the North York Moors[1], near Scaling Dam, after a grey Hyundai Kona SUV and a black Hyundai i40 collided on Sunday, October 8. Tragically, the Teesside driver of the Kona, a man in his late 40s from the East Cleveland area, was later pronounced dead.

North Yorkshire[2] Police launched an investigation into the incident but no arrests were made intially. The force has now issued an update, saying the i40 driver, a man in his 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

  • He has been released on bail while enquiries continue. As previously reported, the i40 driver was taken to hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening at the time.

Paramedics treated both drivers at the scene, with officers closing the road between the Scaling Dam and the Runswick Bay turn-off for several hours. The crash saw a large-scale emergency response, with the Humber Coastguard helicopter called to the scene. Two people were taken to the James Cook University Hospital[5], in Middlesbrough[6], with Marton[7] Road reportedly being closed as the helicopter landed at the hospital.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The driver of the Hyundai i40, a man in his 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.”
