Representatives of vital charities from across Weymouth gathered at the Weymouth Town Council offices on Commercial Road to receive much-needed cheques from the Mayor’s Christmas Fund.
Mayor Kate Wheller appealed for donations from the community for the fund – and a total of GBP1,563 was shared by five recipients – charities and individuals. Amanda and J.P Deverly are trustees at Weymouth Foodbank which relies on funding and donations to be able to keep running and helping those in need.

J.P explained that in comparison to three years ago, people were able to use their service temporarily before being able to get back on track. He added: “Some people are coming every week because they can’t make ends meet.” Another recipient of the Mayor’s Christmas Fund was local mum Ollie Isbel who was unable to attend the service due to illness.
Mayor, Cllr Kate Wheller said: “She has been very, very poorly all year suffering from cancer and I wanted to make sure that she and her little family have a very special Christmas. I felt very strongly that I wanted to be able to do that for her.” Neil Hardisty and Jan McKie were at the celebration representing the Nest, which is a not-for-profit collection of community social supermarkets based in Weymouth.

The cafe is also open to members of the public, at an increased price.
Debbie Legg and Suzy Rodrigues were also at the event representing the Bus Shelter which was set up to relieve the need of people sleeping rough in Dorset by providing shelter, warmth, food and support. Story continues

They said, ‘when people first come to us, they are from the streets,’ explaining that they are always so shocked and grateful to receive daily essentials like blankets and clothes.
The Bus Shelter supports people by getting them from the bus into rented accommodation.
