Murder investigation into Slatyford, Newcastle assault

Northumbria Police received a report that a man had been assaulted on Cartmel Green in Slatyford shortly after 11.42pm yesterday (December 6). Emergency services attended and found a man, 23, with serious injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article. He died at the scene despite the best efforts of medical staff.

A police spokesperson said his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers at this difficult time. An investigation has since been launched and officers are currently treating the assault as murder. Detective Superintendent Sean McGuigan, the senior investigating officer said: “A young man has sadly lost his life and our thoughts remain with his family at this devastating time.

“An investigation has been launched and a number of officers are working hard to establish exactly what has happened in the moments leading up to this tragic incident. “While enquiries are at an early stage, we do believe those involved are known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public. “Officers remain at the scene and across the wider area, carrying out additional patrols and offering reassurance and we would ask anyone who has concerns, or information they would like to pass on to make themselves known.”

Officers have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of murder, while a woman, 49, and another man, 24, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Most read: Start December with Your Community at Heart!
