N5 road sign is inconveniencing residents

A local councillor has called on Mayo County Council to move a road sign for the new N5 dual carriageway that he claims is in the wrong place and is blocking a light source for nearby residents.

Fine Gael Cllr Ger Deere told a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District that the road sign (pictured above) is currently blocking a street light for residents living near the turnoff for the new N5 on the Breaffy Road in Castlebar. In addition, it is located too far away from the turnoff and this is causing motorists to go the wrong way.

"It is way before the actual turn and what is happening now is that cars are turning left onto a cul-de-sac road.

"I was driving in that way and seen three cars caught out by it, turning there instead of onto the new road," he said.

Cllr Deere said there were also issues occurring at the turn-off for the Moneen Garden Centre and Aghalusky on the old N5 where there is no stop sign in place. He said a stop sign needs to be installed to prevent a potential accident, adding that pedestrian safety must also be examined in the Pontoon area between Foxford and Castlebar.

"It is a really dangerous spot with no footpaths.

Residents of the hotel have been walking in dark clothing with no hi-vis jackets and something needs to be done."
