Naked bike ride and crash: Daily Echo’s top July stories

The month commenced with a popular article about a seafront pub[1] boasting one of the best views in Hampshire. The Osborne View at Hill Head was crowned our Pub of the Week thanks to its hearty pub classics, locally brewed beers, beach bar, and impressive view. Less than a week after that article was published, we broke the news that a new cheese and wine bar had opened in the heart of Southampton[2].

With foodies clearly at the heart of our readership, people enjoyed finding out about Piace Cheese and Wine Bar in London Road. Owner Jemma Gammon said she was keen to ‘bring something different’ to the city. One day later, Skylark Golf and Country Club announced it would operate as normal[3] – having just said it had gone bust.

The initial news of it folding was revealed on July 12, shortly followed by administrators confirming it would be business as usual. Travel[4] woes hit Red Funnel passengers on July 15 after the ferry was forced to turn back to Southampton[5]. An incident onboard involving a ‘distressed’ passenger forced the ferry, travelling to the Isle of Wight, to turn back.

More pub news next – but in this case sad news, as the Black Phoenix pub in Bedford Place announced it would close its doors[6]. The independent pub partially blamed ‘high rents and inflated energy prices’ for the shock closure. Later that same day, several cyclists shed their clothes and enjoyed a naked jaunt on their bikes around Southampton[7].

The city played host to the World Naked Bike Ride on July 22, with a dozen cyclists taking part on Southampton[8] Common. Finally, the month ended with a ‘you can’t park there mate’ moment following a motorway mishap. A car ploughed into road barriers after switching lanes[9] at the last minute.

The driver was travelling towards the M27 when they attempted to cross into another lane, heading to the M271.
