New intelligent speed cameras more likely to catch drivers spotted on Midlands roads

More speed cameras have been upgraded on major roads in the Midlands to make it easier for them to catch drivers who breach the limit. New digital cameras use cutting-edge technology and mean road markings are no longer needed to catch speeding drivers. Police have said around 20 cameras are initially being upgraded across Staffordshire – but they have yet to reveal exact locations[1].

It has emerged, however, that more of the new digital cameras have been installed in Stoke-on-Trent. All four speed cameras on the Potteries Way ring-road have been upgraded, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports[2]. More cameras have also been upgraded on the A53 at Baddeley Green.

POLL: Is the BBC licence fee good value for money?[4] It is not yet clear whether camera improvements will also be rolled out in other parts of the county. It’s also not known whether the force intends to announce the locations of the new cameras, and the force has not responded to requests.

Police chiefs say the revamped cameras will make it easier to catch speeding motorists and process cases faster. The technology also means should an image be clear enough, officers can punish other offences such as using a phone while behind the wheel. Locations for the new cameras have been chosen “based on long-term data which confirms that the cameras have been very effective in reducing road traffic collisions”, senior officers say.

They will use a radar device to accurately measure the speed of each vehicle that passes. The cameras will automatically send high-quality images of any vehicles exceeding the speed limit to the enforcement team. Inspector Mark Joynson, of the force’s Roads Policing Unit, said recently: “Speed limits are really important for road safety as the speed a vehicle travels at is a major contributor to the outcome if someone is involved in a road traffic collision.

“The installation of the new technology will make it easier to check speeds across Staffordshire[5] and we hope they will provide a visual reminder of the work we do every day to keep all road users as safe as possible.”
