‘Number of casualties’ with one airlifted to hospital after serious M6 crash

One person was rushed to hospital in an air ambulance while ‘multiple others’ were injured after a serious crash on the M6 this morning. The smash happened near Warrington just before 7.50am this morning (Monday) with the motorway fully shut off in both directions as emergency services responded.[1] Police said two HGVs, a white Ford Zetec and a white Ford Kuga were involved in the crash. One person was airlifted to hospital from the scene with a serious chest injury.

Officers said a ‘number of other casualties’ were rushed to hospital by paramedics.

The southbound carriageway reopened at around 9.10am, though delays of 30 minutes remain. Three lanes remain shut on the northbound carriageway with hour delays and around seven miles of congestion, according to National Highways.

In a statement, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “The M6 northbound is currently closed in Warrington following a serious collision. At 7.48am on Monday 11 December police were called to reports of a multi-vehicle collision on the M6 northbound, at Thelwall Viaduct. “Officers attended the scene and found the collision involved two HGVs, a white Ford Zetec and a white Ford Kuga.

Fire and ambulance were called to the scene and the road was closed in both directions to allow air ambulance to land. “One person has sustained a serious chest injury as a result of the collision, they have been taken to hospital via air ambulance. A number of other casualties have been taken to hospital by paramedics.

“The southbound carriageway reopened at around 9.10am, but the northbound carriageway remains closed at this time.
