Police arrest man, 32, as probe continues into fatal Staffordshire smash

Police[1] have arrested a 32-year-old man after a woman was killed in a Staffordshire smash. Emergency services had been scrambled to the A5 near Great Wyrley last night to reports of a crash between two cars. As reported by StokeonTrentLive[2] the Watling Street collision, which occurred at around 11.25pm, resulted in one woman being confirmed dead at the scene and three taken to hospital.

Now Staffordshire Police[3] has revealed that a 32-year-old man, of Cannock, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The force say the collision on the eastbound carriageway – between the M6 Toll entrance roundabout and Turf roundabout – involved a Kia and black BMW. A woman in her 60s, who was inside the Kia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile a man in his 70s, also in the Kia was taken to hospital. A man in his 20s, who was in the BMW, was taken to hospital and is described as being in a critical condition. An investigation is now continuing into the collision.

The smash saw West Midlands Ambulance Service[6] send a number of resources to the scene. The service sent three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor, a Critical Care Paramedic and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance Critical Care Car to the scene. An ambulance service spokesman said: “On arrival crews discovered two cars had been in collision, one of which had overturned.

From that car, a woman was found to be in a critical condition and already receiving basic life support from fire service colleagues. “Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, it became apparent nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene. A man, from the same car, was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Walsall Manor Hospital.

“From the second car, a man was treated for serious injuries, not believed to be life-threatening, and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. A doctor travelled with the patient to help continue treatment en-route to hospital. A second man from the second car was taken to New Cross Hospital after being treated for injuries not believed to be serious.”

The road is now back open. Witnesses – or those with CCTV or dashcam footage – should call the force on 101 and quote incident 898 of December 21. Alternatively e-mail the collision investigation team directly on [email protected].
