Police issue statement as road shut off following fatal fire

Police believe the person who died in this morning's fatal Pott Shrigley blaze was a 97-year-old woman. And Shrigley Road remains closed this afternoon as an investigation into the incident continues. As reported by CheshireLive[1] crews from Bollington, Poynton, Macclesfield[2], Lymm and two further engines from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were sent to the scene at around 1.25am.

The blaze - said to have affected the first floor and roof space - also saw three neighbours being taken to hospital. This afternoon, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that sadly the occupant of the property had passed away. Officials have launched a joint investigation - alongside Cheshire Police - to pinpoint the cause of the blaze.

Cheshire Police say Shrigley Road remains closed as crews stay at the scene. A spokesman told CheshireLive: "At around 1.30am police were called to support Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service following a fire at a house on Shrigley Road, Pott Shrigley. "Sadly, a woman died as a result of the fire.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but she believed to be a 97-year-old woman. "Her next of kin have been informed. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service have launched an investigation into the cause of a fire and Shrigley Road remains closed at this time."
