Police officer rushed to hospital after city centre Uber crash

A police officer involved in a crash with an Uber driver was rushed to hospital this morning after being cut free from wreckage. The smash, between a police vehicle and the taxi, happened on the A4400 St Chads Queensway in Birmingham city centre[1]. Another officer who was in the police car suffered minor injuries.

The taxi driver, and a passenger, were uninjured. The major route remained closed at midday today with a cordon stretching for around 30 metres[2] from outside PureGym, opposite St Chad’s Cathedral, past the edge of Snow Hill Queensway, and towards the B4100. It will remain in place while emergency services deal with the incident.

Steven, who overlooked the scene from a treadmill at PureGym, said: “I saw all this happening from out the window. It’s really bad; shocking. Just hope everyone involved is okay.”

West Midlands Police[4] released a statement on social media platform X earlier today. It read: “St Chads Queensway is currently closed at Snow Hill Queensway after a collision involving a police vehicle and a taxi. “An officer driving the police car which was responding to an incident, had to be cut out of the vehicle and has been taken to hospital.

Another officer in the vehicle received minor injuries.

The taxi driver and a passenger, thankfully were uninjured.”

We have contacted the force for further information.
