Police search for person of interest in death of Waterville, Maine liquor store worker

Maine State Police are continuing to search for a person of interest named in the death of a liquor store employee in Waterville earlier this week, authorities said.

Spirdal Hubiak, 20, of Waterville, was named as a person of interest in the death of an employee at Damon’s Beverage on Jefferson Street on Thursday. Law enforcement are asking the public to be on the lookout for the man, who may be armed, according to a statement from Maine State Police.

A warrant for Hubiak’s arrest on the charge of murder has been issued. Investigators believe he left the state.

Efforts to locate him are under way, the statement detailed.

State police described Hubiak as a man in his early twenties with dark hair. He drives a 2010 black Ford Taurus with Maine registration plate 4666ZR.

“If you see this individual and/or vehicle, do not approach,” state police said.

Anyone who sees Hubiak and/or his car is urged to call state police at (207) 624-7076 or the Waterville Police Department at (207) 680-4700.

Officers responded shortly after 4:30 a.m. Thursday to a call from Damon’s Beverage, where an employee of the business discovered the body of a co-worker inside.

Waterville police called the state police Major Crimes Unit for assistance, according to state police.

The employee’s body was taken to the Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was expected to be conducted Friday.

The individual’s name is currently being withheld, state police said.

Investigators developed Hubiak, who also worked at Damon’s Beverage, as a person of interest in the employee’s death, according to state police.
