Portage RCMP retrieve stolen school division truck after man goes on joy ride

Portage la Prairie RCMP officers arrested a man following a truck theft from the Portage la Prairie School Division. On December 7th at 9 a.m., the Portage RCMP detachment received reports that a truck from the school division had been stolen from North Memorial School. Police located the stolen vehicle parked at the Canad Inns a little while later and attempted a traffic stop.

However, the vehicle fled dangerously from police at high speed, passing several motorists and ignoring all stop signs. Officers confirmed that the depicted suspect in the vehicle theft was still the driver, and police were able to identify the man during the attempted traffic stop. The vehicle was located and recovered the following day.

28-year-old Louis Merrick has been arrested and charged with: Theft of a truck – No pursuit involved – Flight from a police officer – Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle – Driving while disqualified, and operating while prohibited.

Merrick was brought before a judge and released pending court in the new year.
