Radipole Lane crash sees residents call for action
Fortunately no-one was hurt, but members of the Weymouth community are growing concerned that someone could get killed and say that action is needed. Emergency services were called to Radipole Lane in Southill on Sunday evening following the latest smash. A man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
In October,[1] there was a dramatic late-night crash which saw multiple cars wrecked and thousands of pounds worth of damage caused[2] – this incident is still being investigated. A resident said of Sunday’s crash: “We understand a car lost control outside our house and hit the lamppost and knocked down the corner of our front wall. “We didn’t witness the accident as we were in the back of our house but heard the thump.”

The homeowner added: “This is the second time we have had an incident outside our house in under three years.
“Our son’s car was parked outside two and a half years ago and was written off in a crash.” The impact of the crash bent the lamppost and the electrics had to be removed (Image: Supplied) A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “We received a report at 8.08pm on Sunday, December 3 of a collision in Radipole Lane in Weymouth involving a car that had collided with a parked vehicle, a wall and a lamppost.
“Officers attended and there were no reports of any injuries. “A 21-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of driving offence and police left the scene shortly before 10pm.” Police were atthe scen for almost two hours and arrested a 21-year-old man on driving offences (Image: Supplied)
Another local resident also called for something to be done about drivers speeding along the road. He said: “It has become a bit of a rat run and people forget it is a residential area.” “Maybe speed bumps, maybe a speed camera, but speed indicators might be worth trying.
“One day someone will get in the way of the cars, and we shouldn’t have to wait for somebody to get hurt for something to happen.” Residents have called for action before someone gets hurt (Image: Andy Jones) Cllr Peter Barrow has previously called the lane a ‘rat run’[3] and is also calling for action.
He added: “Speeding has been an issue ever since I was elected four and a half years ago. “I feel quite strongly about it. No one has been killed yet, but there have been near misses, and someone will get killed – it’s utterly wrong.
“I have had numerous conversations with Dorset Council highways, and to date they have been reluctant to take any action. Their view is that a speed watch group would be the best answer. “I will go back to have another go.
Doing nothing is not an option in my view and quite frankly it is getting ridiculous.
“People are scared and frightened and quite rightly so they shouldn’t be scared sitting in their front rooms.”
