Retired firefighter saves couple from icy pond in New Hampshire
WAKEFIELD, NH (WGME)— Two people were rescued after going through the ice in Wakefield, New Hampshire. Around 9:30 Wednesday morning, Wakefield Police say a couple living near Charlie Fielding’s Pond heard people calling for help from the pond. Police say the husband ran to the scene while his wife called for help.
The rescuer, a retired firefighter, had grabbed a ring buoy from his yard and tossed it into the pond, getting both victims out of the water.
Both suffered hypothermia and were hospitalized.
Wakefield Police say a good rule of thumb is to make sure ice is at least six inches thick before walking on a body of water.
