Rotherham boss explains Leicester City gameplan after shot-shy display

Rotherham manager Leam Richardson has said that he hoped to take the game against Leicester City[1] to the latter stages before throwing more players forward in search for a winner. The bottom side visited the King Power Stadium[2] looking to pull off a shock result and stop City from extending their lead at the top of the Championship[3]. In an attempt to do so, they put every man behind the ball to try and stop City from making the breakthrough.

It’s a plan that worked until the hour mark when Patson Daka[4] bundled in Wilfred Ndidi[5]‘s scuffed shot for his first of two goals of the afternoon. His second came from the penalty spot just five minutes later after he was fouled by goalkeeper Viktor Johansson.

City sealed the three points with 18 minutes left to play when Chelsea loanee Cesare Casadei[8] got his second goal for the club with a diving header.

The match was completely dominated by Leicester, who had a total of 24 shots compared to Rotherham’s two. Speaking after the game, Richardson, who was taking charge of just his third Rotherham game, said that the plan was to have more of a go as the game went on had the score remained level. “For 60 minutes we were very good value,” he said, via the Rotherham Advertiser[9]. “I was hoping we could take it into the latter stages and get a couple of bodies forward and possibly counter on the opposition.

You’ve got to respect Leicester. Congratulations to them. They’re full of quality and up there for a reason.

“We’re in a really challenging division and we’re stretched for bodies at the minute. Fingers crossed we can get reinforcements sooner rather than later. I thought the lads dug deep.”

The result moves City six points clear of second-placed Ipswich ahead of the Boxing Day clash at Portman Road.

Rotherham, meanwhile remain bottom of the table and nine points adrift of safety.
