Samuel Smith’s Brewery has been urged to return Spalding’s White Horse to ‘safe and original’ condition before crash

The owners of a historic pub have been urged to return this listed building to its safe and original condition following a crash. The White Horse in Spalding has been damaged after being hit yesterday – following a collision involving a small silver car and a larger black one. Firefighters had to cut free one casualty after the incident.

Some of the bay windows of this building, which is believed to have been built in 1553 – has been smashed.

Now this once picturesque thatched pub, which is thought to have been built using materials from the old town Priory, has been boarded up. One set to cover the damage from the site of the crash while the second shields a previous broken window. South Holland District Council’s planning department has been in touch with the pub owners, Samuel Smith’s Brewery, to remind them that the building should be ‘returned to its safe and original condition’ as a matter of urgency.

The district council’s building control officers were also called in by the police to assess the structure of the building following the collision.

A spokesman said: “They collaborated with the building owner’s contractors to carry out immediate works deemed necessary to remove the immediate danger. Officers then monitored the building until the immediate danger was removed.” Council leader Nick Worth, who has previously called on the brewery to take better care of the building and prevent it becoming an eyesore[1], said he did have some sympathy with the owners following the crash.

He said: “If it means that they come down and do some work that would be great.”

The roads surrounding The White Horse, Churchgate, Church Street and High Street, were closed for several hours yesterday as a result of the crash, which was reported to Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue just before 10am.

Crews from Spalding and Donington attended the scene in Churchgate, along with police and two ambulances – with ‘minor injuries’ reported.
