Seven-vehicle Coast Road crash sees major 999 response with person taken to hospital

One person was taken to hospital and six people were treated at the scene following a seven-vehicle crash. Seven vehicles collided on the eastbound carriageway of the Coast Road near Battlehill in Wallsend[1], North Tyneside[2]. A number of vehicles had reportedly overturned onto their roofs following the crash, which occurred just after 4.30pm on Thursday.

Police and paramedics attended the crash, which occurred prior to the junction with Churchill Street, and six people were treated at the scene and discharged. One patient was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital[3] in Cramlington[4], Northumberland[5]. A spokesperson fort he North East Ambulance Service (NEAS)[6] said: “We were called just after 4.30pm to a seven vehicle road traffic incident on the Coast Road in Newcastle[7].

“We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, a clinical team leader, a specialist paramedic and two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team. Six patients were treated and discharged on the scene, and one patient was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.”

The incident led to major delays on the Coast Road at rush hour. The eastbound was at a standstill and traffic was queuing all the way back to the Central Motorway in Newcastle.

Diversions were put in place by police. Northumbria Police[8] told motorists they had attended the the multi-vehicle collision and there was significant delays due to the carriageway being blocked. The force urged people to avoid the area where possible.

Police confirmed the road reopened to traffic at around 8.15pm, more than three hours almost four hours after the collision occurred.
