Sticker vandal defaces new-look A34 speed camera by blocking lens

A vandal has defaced one of Stoke-on-Trent's new-look speed cameras - by blocking the lens with stickers. Staffordshire Police have installed the new-style cameras on the A34 through Trent Vale[1]. But one of them has been vandalised within days of being installed.

A police spokesman said: "We are aware of this and enquiries are ongoing." Staffordshire Police[2] have 254 fixed speed camera sites. Twenty of them are being upgraded to digital devices which have two cameras on each pole.

The new cameras have also been installed on Leek Road, Leek New Road, and Potteries Way. Funded by Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, they use a radar to accurately measure the speed of a vehicle. There is no longer a need for white lines with a 'secondary check' then carried out using a 'digitally applied line' on the offence images.

Stoke-on-Trent currently has 52 permanent speed cameras.

Police have so far refused to reveal how many of those cameras are being replaced.
