Storm Pia Derbyshire live weather updates as 60mph winds batter county

Derbyshire is currently still experiencing strong winds after a day that has caused havoc across the county with fallen trees, closed road, trains cancelled and businesses disrupted. A yellow weather warning for wind covering the whole of Derbyshire was issued by the Met Office[1] and ended this afternoon (Thursday) at 3pm, instead of the predicted 9pm. People were warned that they may face travel disruption – including bus and train journeys taking longer – as roads and rail were blocked by fallen trees, as well as debris from roofs and buildings.

The Met Office said: “Strong winds are likely to affect a wide area throughout Thursday, potentially causing some travel disruption”. In Derby[2], wind gusts were predicted to reach speeds of more than 55mph on Thursday morning, with the Met Office adding there is a “small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur as a result of flying debris”, due to the gales.
