When members of the public checked on the condition of the driver, he appeared to be sucking on a large balloon. Footage of the accident was posted on X yesterday.

It has not been established if the driver was inhaling a drug or not. A witness sent a segment of the footage to the police through social media platform X. She sent a message asking why the driver was sucking from a balloon after being involved in a car crash.

The Metropolitan police responded with a message which read: “Officers from our East Roads Policing Team attended the A13 near to Lodge Avenue to deal with a single vehicle collision. The circumstances of the collision are still being investigated.” Nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas or hippy crack, is inhaled from balloons.

The drug delivers a sense of euphoria, relaxation and giggling fits,[1] hence its more well-known name. However, side effects can include dizziness, impaired memory and weakness in the legs. Some users have even died of asphyxia in accidents while under the influence of the gas.
