Suspect arrested after fatal crash killed a police officer and National Grid utility worker

A driver in Waltham crashed into utility workers and a police officer Wednesday afternoon, and then proceeded to steal a police car, flee the scene and crash the cruiser, law enforcement officials said Wednesday. Two people were killed in the initial crash.

The Middlesex District Attorney's office said police arrested the suspect, 54-year-old Peter Simon of Woodsville, New Hampshire, after a foot pursuit. He has been charged with two counts of manslaughter and armed robbery, and is set to be arraigned in Waltham District Court Thursday, with additional charges likely.

Waltham Police officer Paul Tracey, 58, and an unnamed 36-year-old National Grid worker from Cambridge were killed in the crash, according to the district attorney's office.

Tracey was working a police detail at the National Grid work site, the press release said.

The first crash occurred on Totten Pond Road in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Two other National Grid workers were also injured in the crash, according to the DA's office, with one taken to the hospital for treatment and released.
