Teen runs over 76-year-old; mom fined for giving scooter

Bengaluru: A metropolitan magistrate traffic court in the city on December 11 held a homemaker guilty of handing over her gearless scooter to her minor son, who crashed the two-wheeler into a 76-year-old pedestrian and claimed his life in 2022. The woman has also been fined Rs 26,000.The case against the 16-year-old student-son of the woman, 38, is going on in a juvenile justice board.The accident had occurred around 4.45pm on December 23 last, when the juvenile rider rammed septuagenarian Ramakrishna M, near Kidwai hospital on Hosur Road. Ramakrishna was crossing the road.

Soon after the accident, the rider had sped away from the spot. Ramakrishna sustained serious head injuries and was shifted to Nimhans, where he later died.Jayanagar traffic police tracked down the rider using CCTV footage from Kidwai hospital and nearby buildings. Though cops succeeded in getting the details of the scooter and its registration number on the day of accident itself, it took around about seven days to trace the vehicle owner’s house.

The address of the owner was different from that mentioned in RTO records. Besides, the insurance of the vehicle too had lapsed.First, police seized the vehicle and issued a notice to the rider and his mother, in whose name the two-wheeler was registered, to appear for investigation. By then, Ramakrishna had succumbed to his injuries and cops registered the FIR under IPC sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 304A (causing death due to negligence).According to the rider, he was returning home after meeting a friend and rammed Ramakrishna after losing control of the vehicle. “Fearing public wrath, I sped away,” he told police.After completing investigation, cops filed charges against the juvenile and handed over the chargesheet to the juvenile court.

The cops filed a case against his mother and chargesheeted her under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 for handing over her scooter to a minor.
