The most shocking pieces of video evidence we’ve seen in court this year

The use of video footage to show a crime being committed in real time is the most powerful evidence that can put a criminal behind bars or save the wrongly accused. From the arrests of murderers minutes after the killing or the moments before a driver causes a fatal crash, footage such as this can send chills down the spines of those watching. Whether it's CCTV, police body-worn footage, or dashcam clips there is an array of video evidence available to prosecutors in the modern age and it's harder than ever for those who break the law to avoid detection.

Here's a rundown of the most shocking videos played in Welsh courts this year. For the latest court reports, sign up to our crime newsletter here[1].

Arrest footage of torture gang

Cardiff thug Fortune Lawson ran a brutal and highly organised crime gang that kidnapped, imprisoned, tortured, and blackmailed a man for a GBP100,000 ransom. In scenes reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino film the masked members of the gang used weapons including guns, knives, and an "attack dog" along with techniques such as waterboarding to terrify and torment their victim.

Lawson and a gang of criminal associates he recruited from London abducted their victim in Cardiff[2]. After torturing him in a flat they took him to a safehouse in Hertfordshire while negotiations were conducted for cash in return for the man's life. It wasn't the first time Lawson, who goes by the street name Mills or Millz, and a gang of his thugs had abducted and tortured a man.

At the time of the Cardiff incident he was being investigated by police in London for kidnapping and torturing and man - including pouring boiling water over him - to get cash. Sending Lawson and his gang down at Cardiff Crown Court[3], where there was a heavy armed police presence outside, Judge Daniel Williams said the defendant believed himself to be "untouchable". He added: "Your hubris led you to believe [the victims] would not dare to go to the police whatever you subjected them to....

The agony they must have went through must have been unimaginable and the extent of the torture broke them completely." Lawson, aged 27, of O'Leary Drive, Grangetown, Cardiff, was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment with an extended licence period of five years. See the arrest:

Killer of defenceless woman captured on CCTV

Video footage depicted a killer hours after he walked into a woman's home and beat her to death before decapitating and dismembering her. Luke Deeley was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and experiencing delusions and hallucinations when he killed 65-year-old June Fox-Roberts.

The 26-year-old entered her home in Llantwit Fardre, near Pontypridd[4], in the early hours of June 21, 2021, before attacking her and dismembering her with an axe then placing her limbs in bags[5]. Mrs Fox-Roberts' remains were discovered later that day by her daughter and a friend who became concerned after being unable to contact her. A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court[6] heard Deeley left the address in St Anne's Drive having attempted to clean up the scene and also shaved inside the property and dyed his hair.

He spent the night sleeping in a trailer at Creigiau Tyres nearby. He was caught on CCTV footage in which he appeared to be talking and singing to himself while sitting on the floor. He was arrested on June 23 and claimed a "higher power" was telling him to kill someone and had the delusional belief a group of people were out to get him.

He was sectioned under Section 45 of the Mental Health Act and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility. Watch the CCTV clip:

Paedophile police officer handed life sentence

Paedophile police officer Lewis Edwards, who sexually abused and blackmailed hundreds of young girls online, obnoxiously batted away questions put to him during his police interview. Footage of the "abhorrent" sexual offender has been released in which he can be seen sitting quietly in a grey prison-issued tracksuit.

Edwards, 24, of Bridgend[7], was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 12 years, at Cardiff Crown Court[8] after he pleaded guilty to 160 counts relating child sex offences. He targeted girls aged between 10 and 16 on Snapchat and forced them into performing degrading sexual acts on camera. Following his arrest and remand in custody Edwards was interviewed by police officers at a custody suite with the footage later released by South Wales Police[9].

During the interview the defendant sits quietly and barely raises his voice as he answers "no comment" to every question put to him. He was asked how he obtained the material, if he had accessed the dark web, whether he traded or shared indecent images, if he had spoken to children while pretending to be a child himself, and whether there was evidence of him engaging in sexual communications with children and inciting them to perform sexual activity. To every question Edwards stared blankly and answered: "No comment".

This is the interview footage:

Murderer left voicemail confession

A chilling voicemail message was left by a woman who confessed to murdering her mother's neighbour. The killer could be heard crying and screaming as she told her ex-boyfriend she had stabbed someone. Rebecca Press, 31, murdered Marc Ash at her mother's home in New Tredegar[10], in Caerphilly[11], in the early hours of July 17 last year.

She had been drinking and had take Valium in the day leading up to the attack in which she took a three-inch blade from a kitchen drawer and stabbed him near the heart. Mr Ash suffered a cardiac arrest and despite the best efforts of the emergency services his injuries were considered unsurvivable and he was declared dead within an hour of being stabbed. Meanwhile Press had left the flat in Long Row and was hiding in nearby bushes.

She left a voicemail message for her ex-boyfriend Ashley Allan whom she had recently discovered having an affair. In the tearful message left by Press she confessed to stabbing Mr Ash and brands herself a murderer. The message said: "Ash it's really bad.

It's really f****** bad. I've just stabbed someone and killed them. I've just murdered someone.

Please phone me now. F*** (screams). I've just murdered someone." Press was changed her plea to guilty of murder before it reached a conclusion.

She was sentenced to life imprisonment[12] with a minimum term of 20 years. Hear her voicemail confession:

Driver filmed drinking at wheel before fatal crash

Videos showed an intoxicated driver drinking cider behind the wheel moments before he caused a collision which killed his teenage passenger. He was clearly intoxicated while driving and was also under the influence of cannabis.

Ricky Davies, 30, killed his back-seat passenger Dafydd Hughes, 18, and caused serious injury to Graham Leader whose car was hit during the collision on the B4235 between Chepstow[13] and Shirenewton in Monmouthshire[14] on May 8 last year. Mr Hughes suffered catastrophic head injuries and died at the scene of the crash having not worn a seatbelt. Following the collision Davies was found to be almost twice the drink-drive limit and had cannabis in his system.

During a sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court Davies, of Aneurin Terrace, Rhymney, Caerphilly[15], was sentenced to eight years imprisonment[16]. He was also banned from driving for 12 years. This is the evidence:

Mass fight at cemetery

Shocking video footage captured the level of violence and mayhem that descended on a Welsh cemetery as groups of men fought running battles among the gravestones.

The footage shows groups of boys and men with bats, hammers, knives, and axes attacking each other and chasing rivals around Swansea's Morriston Cemetery in the middle of the day. Vehicles were also used as weapons to deliberately crash into parked cars and to intimidate and pursue people around the grounds. During the melee on August 5, 2022, gravestones were damaged, a number of people were seriously injured, and funerals were disrupted.

At one stage three of the brawlers intruded upon a cremation service for a mother-of-five by running into the chapel of rest and spitting on the floor and drinking water from a vase before hiding a weapon among the precious floral tributes having first wiped it down to try to remove fingerprints. When the disorder was reported to police by members of the public firearms officers and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene and the incident quickly made headlines around Wales and beyond. In the aftermath of the disturbance police set about identifying the culprits and piecing together the events of the day.

The name given to the investigation was Operation Hitchin and it ultimately led to seven men being jailed and the truth of the shocking incident revealed - that a number of warring extended families had chosen a graveside blessing at a peaceful cemetery to stage their latest violent confrontation. Student carries drunk woman to his home before raping her

A university student carried an extremely drunk young woman to his halls of residence then raped her. Preet Vikal, 20, took a photograph of the victim in his room before attacking her.

Vikal and the victim, who did not know each other, went on a night out in Cardiff in June last year with separate groups of friends. The victim was described as "plainly, hopelessly intoxicated". CCTV, which was played in court, showed Vikal carrying the victim in his arms and later across his shoulders at around 4am.

He then laid her on the ground and lifted her to her feet. As they passed the Blackweir pub the victim was walking but leaning heavily on Vikal. Vikal brought the victim to his room at Talybont and took what the prosecutor described as a "trophy photograph" of her on his bed.

Although the victim was not naked the picture was revealing. The victim had no recollection of the rape but she remembered waking naked next to Vikal in his bed. She did not know where she was or who she was with.

The defendant was sentenced to six years and nine months detention in a young offenders' institute. The CCTV clip shown in court:

Dangerous driver crashed into bus station

CCTV footage caught the moment a teenage driver clipped a traffic island at speed and launched his car into a postbox and bus stop. He narrowly avoided hitting a pedestrian who ran for cover as the vehicle hurtled towards them.

Ismail Adan, 19, was driving along Bute Street in Cardiff[17] at around 10pm on March 30 with a passenger in the front seat and appeared to be speeding on the wrong side of the road. But having seen a car approaching him head-on he swerved his Vauxhall Mokka into the correct lane but clipped a traffic island. Adan lost control and crashed first into a postbox and then a bus stop.

A pedestrian could be seen running out of the direction of the car and a nearby phone box was narrowly avoided. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to carry out a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement, 200 hours of unpaid work, must pay costs of GBP420, and was disqualified from driving.

Armed robbery at a shop in Cardiff

The moment an armed robber threatened a shopkeeper with two knives was picked up by CCTV. He can be seen to follow her behind the counter while demanding money. The terrified shopkeeper can then be seen shaking as she searches her pockets for change.

Christopher Jenkins, 35, has been jailed for five years and three months after he pleaded guilty to robbery at McColl's Shop in Cardiff[18] on June 19. The court heard his victim had been left suffering nightmares and with "constant anxiety". Footage shows Jenkins entering the shop in Station Road, Llanishen[19], wearing a balaclava and socks on his hands in order to "terrify staff members into submission".

He shouted: "Where's the f****** money?" and "I want the f****** notes". The shopkeeper was said to have been "petrified" and told the defendant she didn't have access to the till, which was empty due to the time of day. He then asked her if she had any money herself but she only had 20p.

Admitting defeat the defendant said: "I'll have the cigs then." He stole a total of 10 packets of cigarettes worth GBP173 before running from the scene after which the victim went over and locked the door. See the incident here:

Car loses control and crashes into house

A driver who was racing with another car lost control and crashed into a house and caused GBP4,000-worth of damage before fleeing the scene. He later tried to get a friend to take the blame for him.

Keiron Card, 28, was racing in a hired black Seat Leon alongside a Volkswagen driven by Luke Watson on April 30, 2021, in Rhymney[20] when he collided head-on with the wall of a house in Hill Street. Residents Tracey and Steven Richards were inside the house at the time watching television when they heard a loud bang. A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court[21] heard when they went outside they saw the two cars had crashed into the side of the property.

Card was seen to crawl out of the passenger side door of the Seat and appeared "hurt and shaken up". He told the couple he would "take the blame" for the collision but was seen to limp to the other side of the road and get into an Audi driven by a woman, which drove off. Card was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months.

He was ordered to carry out 120 hours unpaid work, to pay GBP420 in costs, and was disqualified from driving for two years and six months. The moment of the crash:

Man had 'moment of madness' after driving into path of oncoming train

A driver experienced a "moment of absolute madness" after driving his car into the path of a train at a level crossing in a "dangerous manoeuvre". The train driver had to use emergency brakes in order to prevent a collision.

Dalat Gulzar, 51, ignored signs and flashing light at Llanbedr railway station in Gwynedd[22] on June 19 last year and endangered the lives of his passengers and those on board the oncoming train when he pulled out in his black Range Rover. CCTV footage played to a trial at Mold Crown Court[23] showed witnesses looking on in horror as the incident played out. At the defendant's sentencing hearing Recorder Wyn Lloyd-Jones said: "It's obvious the train driver who gave evidence suffered emotionally as a result of what unfolded before him.

One of the things he said was this was one of the nearest misses he has had. CCTV from the train made for shocking viewing." Gulzar was sentenced to a 12-month community order.

He was also ordered to carry out 120 hours unpaid work and to pay court costs of GBP2,400. The defendant was also disqualified from driving for 12 months. Watch the clip for yourself:

Man walks into Cardiff cafe with a hunting knife

A topless man was seen by horrified bystanders waving a hunting knife above his head before he entered a cafe and sat down calmly.

The knife was removed by a member of staff after the man placed it on a table matter-of-factly. Walter Kanhukamwe, 21, appeared to be in an agitated state as he walked around the street of Cardiff[24] brandishing the hunting knife with a blade measuring up to eight inches. Around 7.45am on October 10 last year the defendant was seen approaching a house in Constellation Street, Adamsdown[25], before kicking and banging on the door and shouting: "Open the f****** door".

A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court[26] heard Kanhukamwe walked in the direction of Adamsdown Primary School[27] and was seen waving the knife in the air above his head. The defendant then entered the Imperial Cafe in Splott Road, Splott[28], and sat down at a table. Kanhukamwe was approached by a woman who gave him a bottle of water after he had placed the knife on the table.

He then placed the knife on another table and the weapon was removed by a staff member as the defendant calmly played with the water bottle. He was sentenced to a total of 21 months imprisonment. This is the moment he was seen on camera:

Group attacks family outside their home

A couple and a friend armed themselves with a glass and a wooden plank before smashing a woman's car up and attacking her family.

They made threats to kill the woman after she told them she was going to ring social services. Sinead Feneck, 28, Kyle O'Callaghan, 27, and Jordan Hull, 26, caused a "scene of violence" in Cardiff[29] on March 23 last year when they attended the home of Zoe Hall and her family. Ms Hall had threatened to call social services on Feneck, which led to a confrontation between the two.

A sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court[30] heard Feneck and Ms Hall bumped into each other outside a shop in Llanrumney[31] and the defendant said: "I am going to kill you if you grass me up to social services" and threatened to throw a glass bottle at her car. She added: "Watch in the next five minutes." Feneck, her partner O'Callaghan, and Hull attended Ms Hall's home in Llanrumney when her sister Zara Hall saw O'Callaghan smashing up her car.

She went outside and began to record them. Prosecutor Byron Broadstock said Adam Hall went outside but was confronted by O'Callaghan who threw a punch at Zara Hall. O'Callaghan then struck Adam Hall to the head several times with the glass, causing a cut to the back of his head.

Hull, who was wearing black clothing and a balaclava, picked up a piece of wood from the floor and used it in a threatening manner before chasing members of the Hall family. Feneck was described as shouting threats of violence, saying: "Come here - I want to fight you now. I'll rip your heads off."

O'Callaghan was sentenced to a total of 21 months imprisonment. Hull was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. Feneck was sentenced to a 24-month community order.

She must also carry out 19 sessions of an accredited programme and a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement. The brawl was caught on camera:

Car ploughs into drinkers outside pub

A driver deliberately ploughed into a group of people standing outside a pub. The man held a grievance after being thrown out of the pub for fighting.

Gavin Chesterman, 31, of Pontypool[32], drove his Vauxhall Astra at the group outside the Royal Oak pub in Pontypool on January 29 last year. Fortunately no-one was seriously injured as a result of the collision but one victim ended up under the wheels of the car. CCTV footage of the incident was played to Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court[33] at a sentencing hearing and it showed Chesterman driving at speed into the pub's beer garden and hitting a woman from behind.

He mounted a table before the car came to a stop and people came to the aid of the injured woman while attempting to remove the defendant from the car. Despite the damage he caused Chesterman continued to rev his engine and it appeared to witnesses he was trying to move his car. He ran off but was later arrested.

He was sentenced to 40 months imprisonment. See what happened:

Dangerous driver posted video of himself driving at 149mph

A dangerous driver filmed himself speeding at 149mph on the M4 as a puppy slept on the passenger seat. The clip was shot before he almost lost control of the car.

He posted the video to Instagram with the caption: "Puppy hit his first 150mph today." Aaron Duffy, 29, uploaded the video to social media in July last year which showed him speeding on the motorway between junction 36 and 37 near Bridgend[34]. The figure on the speedometer can be clearly seen and hits the 149mph mark.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Magistrates' Court heard a member of the public saw the footage and contacted GoSafe and an investigation started. Duffy was identified as the driver and CCTV from Traffic Wales was obtained. He was sentenced to an 18-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

He was also banned from driving for two years was ordered to carry out a rehabilitation activity requirement and to pay court costs of GBP85. The clip shot by speeding driver Aaron Duffy:

Cousins kicked and stamped on man's head after feeling 'disrespected'

Two cousins viciously assaulted a man by kicking and stamping on his head after they felt "disrespected". They walked away leaving their victim unconscious on the floor as two women came to assist him.

Luke Carvalho, 21, and Daeshaun Webbe, 20, assaulted Scott Thomas in Newport[35] city centre at around 5.15am on August 21 last year. He suffered a a bloody nose, swelling, a wound to his right ear where a piercing had been ripped out, and footmarks to his chest and shoulders. The defendants were sentenced to 22 months imprisonment each[36].

Distressing CCTV footage was played during a sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court[37] which showed the assault on Mr Thomas. There had been an altercation between the three men when Mr Thomas' glasses were knocked off his head and he was chased to his home nearby before returning to the scene to find his glasses. The victim bumped into Carvalho and ran away but he came to a stop in Cambrian Road.

Carvalho attempted to trip him up and said: "Why you running bruv? Why you running?" Mr Thomas' shoe came off during the attack and Carvalho pulled him towards wheelie bins and punched him to the nose. Mr Thomas bent down to pick up his glasses and the defendant kicked him to the face.

Prosecutor Laurence Jones said the victim had limited vision and couldn't see without his glasses. Carvalho continued the attack and said: "What have you got for me? I know you have got something." Mr Jones said: "Mr Thomas said: 'I have nothing'.

He said he was terrified." The victim heard footsteps behind him and Webbe joined in the assault. Carvalho picked Mr Thomas up and dragged him a short distance as Webbe kicked and punched him to the head and body. He was then dragged along the floor before both defendants stamped on his head and delivered further kicks to his head and body before leaving him unconscious on the floor.

This distressing footage shows the assault:

Armed men confront each other in the street

Men armed with a large machete and a metal pole were involved in a shocking altercation in a Llanelli[38] road. Thomas Davies and Michael Brash confronted each other with the weapons after an argument in a flat spilled out onto the street in front of frightened passers-by. What prompted the outburst of public disorder is not known as there are conflicting accounts of the incident with both men claiming the other threated him with the machete first.

Both men had only been out of prison for a matter of months when they took the weapons onto the street. Sending the pair back to custody a judge described the incident as "ugly, unpleasant, and unnecessary" and he told both men their conduct had been "appalling". Davies was sentenced to eight months in prison while Brash was sentenced to six months in prison.

Man on night out attacks five police officers

A man on a night out was captured on CCTV attacking police officers. Adam Martelette was spared jail after assaulting five officers in Cardiff[40] city centre causing injuries including a lost tooth and possible broken nose.

Cardiff Crown Court[41] heard that Martelette, 26, went out drinking on the night of April 30 last year following a charity boxing match. While in Mill Lane he saw his younger brother being arrested in connection with another matter. When his brother called his name Martelette approached and punched an officer twice to the face, causing swelling to their nose and eye.

Martelette pushed another officer into a metal box, causing a cut, and punched a third officer to the head. He then punched a fourth officer "a number of times" to the stomach and head, breaking a tooth. Eventually Martelette was felled by a police Taser but reacted by spitting at the officers and telling one he would "bite the f*** out of your face" and then biting his finger.

Man throws punch in 'cowardly' pub attack

A man was extremely lucky not to kill a pubgoer in a bizarre dancefloor attack, a court heard. Lee Massaro appeared to speak calmly with the victim before unleashing a vicious punch in a Cardiff pub.

The brutal assault was caught on CCTV on September 18 last year in the Butcher's Arms in Llandaff High Street. The pubgoer had been dancing in an understated manner on the dancefloor, which was lively but not packed. Massaro, 37, stood close to the customer and there was a brief exchange of words before he suddenly lashed out hard.

He tried to land a second blow on his falling victim before another man ushered the drunken attacker outside. The strike left the man with a forehead wound which needed gluing as well as a black eye. Massaro, of Coed Edeyrn in Pentwyn, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court and admitted causing actual bodily harm (ABH).

He was ordered to pay the victim GBP1,400 in compensation and complete 160 hours of unpaid work and 25 days of rehabilitation activity. See the sudden punch in this clip:

Son laughs and pretend to cry upon being arrested on suspicion of murdering mum

Lewis Bush laughed and pretended to cry upon being arrested on suspicion of murdering his own mother. He was also caught on CCTV buying a bottle of Stella while his mother lay dead in her home.

"Caring, loving, and kind" grandmother Kelly Pitt was brutally murdered by her own 27-year-old son who left her for dead in her own home for two days before she was discovered. He callously attempted to clean the scene before leaving the house to withdraw cash and buy a bottle of Stella Artois while her "black and blue" body lay on her bed. Bush assaulted and bullied Ms Pitt, 44, for years before he murdered her at her home in Newport[42] on May 10.

She sustained horrendous injuries with lacerations to her face which was purple and swollen when she was discovered. The bedding and mattress was soaked with her own blood. Having killed his mother Bush lied to his sister Jordan about his mother's condition and fled the scene after Jordan's partner Kieron Saunders attended her flat in Sandalwood Court on the morning of May 12.

He later attended a police station and upon being arrested on suspicion of murdering Ms Pitt he said: "Murder, murder? You must be joking," and: "What? My mum is dead?

Serious?" He later pleaded guilty to his mother's murder after initially denying being responsible. The defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 16 years[43] at Newport Crown Court[44] in an emotionally-charged hearing which saw family members approaching the dock and calling Bush a "murdering scumbag c***".

Thief murders delivery driver with his own van

Christopher Elgifari, 31, ran over Mark Lang who was delivering parcels in Cardiff on March 28 and dragged him for 743m after he became trapped between the van and the road. Mr Lang suffered catastrophic injuries including heart failure and brain damage before dying in hospital 17 days later. As passers-by came to Mr Lang's aid Elgifari ran from the scene and lay low at the home of his parents who were unaware of what their son had done.

He was later arrested and admitted theft and manslaughter but he was found guilty of murder and robbery following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court. Mr Lang had left the keys in his Ford Transit with the engine running as he delivered a parcel to a house in Laytonia Avenue. The defendant was walking past and took the opportunity to sneak into the victim's van and drive off.

Unbeknown to Elgifari the street was a dead end and he was forced to perform a three-point turn before heading back towards Mr Lang who had stood in the road to prevent the defendant from escaping. But footage played to the court showed Elgifari driving straight over the victim without deviating before continuing to drive for more than 700m. Elgifari drove down North Road and came to a stop in New Zealand Road.

Mr Lang had suffered fatal injuries and never regained consciousness.

Elgifari was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 32 years.[45]
