Two arrested every day for drink/drug driving in South Wales
Unemployed people were the worst offenders for driving under the influence between September 2022 to September 2023. Out of 843 arrests, unemployed people accounted for almost a quarter of charges. The data was obtained from South Wales Police by law specialist Legal Expert in a Freedom of Information request.
And now the force has issued a heartfelt plea to the public warning them no one should have to witness the “horrific” scenes officers have had to attend. Inspector Michael Prickett said people need to understand how dangerous driving under the influence is. Inspector Prickett said: “It’s disappointing that people are still prepared to take the risk and get behind the wheel while under the influence.
“I don’t think people are quite grasping the full extent of the danger drink and/or drug-driving poses. “Those that do take the risks clearly don’t think about the families of those people who have died, or been seriously injured at the hands of a driver who is high on drugs or drunk. “Our officers are often the first ones on the scene of these types of collisions and some of the things they have seen are horrific.
“Nobody should ever have to witness that, or have to suffer due to the irresponsible unlawful actions of another.” South Wales Police say some of the crashes they have to attend are horrific (Image: Google Maps) According to arrest rates, the worst occupations for drink driving included bar staff, mechanics, shop employees and admin assistants.
The figures also indicated men were more likely to commit drink driving than women, with the male sex making up over three-quarters of arrests. The worst age group for drink driving was found to be 25 to 34 year-olds, who represented a third of arrests. Anybody who has concerns about someone they believe to be driving under the influence are asked to contact the police on 101 (or 999 if they are posing an imminent danger) or alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
