Two Bristol restaurants named among best in the country

Two restaurants in Bristol have been named among the best in the UK. The top 100 eateries in the country this year have been decided by The Harden’s Guide, which is in its 33rd edition this year. According to The Mirror[1], the Guide is based on feedback from everyday diners[2], rather than the findings and opinions of professional inspectors.

It was compiled from a total of 30,000 reports submitted by 2,500 diners in a survey. The Harden’s Guide includes restaurants of all budgets, including street food vendors and dining rooms. Whilst it was Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria that found itself at the top of the list, two Bristol establishments made it on there, too.

71) Bulrush

Described by the Harden’s Guide as “a modest star of the Bristol dining scene”, this Cotham restaurant has been praised for its “simply outstanding cooking”. The menu has been hailed as “beautifully balanced” and the overall presentation “stunning”. The average full-blown meal at chef-owner George Livesey’s former grocer’s shop will set you back an average of GBP98, the Harden’s Guide states.

This figure is based on a three course dinner, half a bottle of wine, coffee, cover charge, service and VAT. How Bulrush ranked:

  • Food: 4/5 (very good)
  • Service: 3/5 (good)
  • Ambience: 3/5 (good)
89) Wilson’s

Wilson’s has been praised for its seasonal menu

“Champion of hyper-local Bristol produce” Wilson’s can be found on Chandos Road in Redland. The cult-followed independent bistro’s owners, Jan Ostle & Mary WiIson, gather, grow and hunt much of the seasonal produce that can be found on its menu.

A diner said of Wilson’s: “You could be forgiven for missing this small establishment in a residential street – we did! Tables are very close together, but this all adds to the atmosphere – it’s not a restaurant you’d expect to be tasting menu only” A three course dinner, half a bottle of wine, coffee, cover charge, service and VAT will set Wilson’s diners back GBP87 on average.

How Wilson’s ranked:

  • Food: 5/5 (exceptional)
  • Service: 4/5 (good)
  • Ambience: 2/5 (average)
