Two due to stand trial for Leicestershire stabbing plead guilty

Two men due to stand trial for a stabbing in Leicestershire have been sentenced after pleading guilty. Tyler Groom, 21, and 18-year-old Anthony Turigel attacked a 23-year-old man in Market Harborough[1] in June, 2021. The pair stabbed the man in the leg and chest on the evening of Saturday, June 12. Northampton Crown Court[2] heard how Groom, formerly of Harrowden Lane, Finedon, and a group of youths confronted the victim in the Britannia Walk area of the town following an argument the previous day.

After Groom and Turigel, of no fixed address, stabbed the 23-year-old he managed to get to some nearby shops where he collapsed. He was discovered by an off-duty police officer and eventually airlifted to hospital. Leicestershire Police said the man was treated for superficial injuries.

Officers arrested Groom and Turigel the next day and they were both charged with Section 18 (GBH) last year, after being released on bail pending further enquiries. The pair later pleaded guilty to Section 20 GBH. On Wednesday, December 13, at Northampton Crown Court, Groom was sentenced to a total of five years in prison while Turigel was given five months detention in a young offender institution[4].

Detective Constable Alex Horwood, the investigating officer, said: “This was a distressing incident not only for the victim but for those who witnessed it and the aftermath. While this should not have happened at all, it was fortunate the victim did not sustain more serious injuries from the incident. “This has been an extremely difficult time for him and we are pleased the defendants have been convicted.

Quite understandably the incident caused a great deal of concern amongst the local community too and we hope yesterday’s outcome helps in providing some reassurance. “Dealing with knife crime is a major priority for the force and the Lives not Knives campaign, which has been running for many years, aims to educate young people of the dangers and consequences of carrying knives.” The force is encouraging anyone who has concerns about knife crime or crime in the area to report it via 101 or through the force website.
