Ulverston: Homes evacuated as bomb squad called to house

A total of 53 homes were evacuated on Steel Street, Ulverston A major incident has been declared after police officers identified a suspicious item in a house. An operation is ongoing after 53 homes in the Steel Street area of Ulverston were evacuated on Wednesday evening.

Cumbria Constabulary said that their Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was carrying out an assessment with a 100m cordon in place around the area. A 46-year-old man is in police custody after he was arrested in connection with the incident. The item was discovered on Wednesday by police following concerns for the welfare of a male on Steel Street.

Westmorland and Furness Council opened a reception centre overnight at Ulverston leisure centre for those residents who had been evacuated from their homes. Ch Supt Mick Bird said that the work undertaken by the bomb disposal unit may take a “number of hours”. He said: “The priority of this response is to ensure the safety of all residents.

As soon as it is deemed safe to do so, residents will be allowed to return to their homes.” Motorists are asked to avoid the area as North Lonsdale Road, between Sir John Barrow Way and Steel Street, has been closed. Follow BBC Cumbria on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram.
