Van driver flees four-vehicle smash which left man trapped and part of A5 shut

Emergency services raced to the scene of a serious smash which forced the closure of part of the A5. They responded to 999 calls to report a four-vehicle collision on Holly Lane close to its junction with the A5 at just before 5pm yesterday (December 12). A Nissan Primastar.

Volkswagen van, Mini and Ford Fiesta were involved in the smash. As a result, the road was blocked so police closed it off. Firefighters were called into action to free a man who was trapped inside one of the cars.

Medics from West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS)[1] stepped in and treated the man, who has not been identified, for what have been described as ‘potentially serious’ injuries. They also treated a female passenger who was in his car. Both were taken to the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

Another driver was also treated at the scene and taken to the George Eliot Hospital. A WMAS spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a four-vehicle RTC on Watling Street at 4.54pm yesterday. Three ambulances and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

On arrival we discovered three patients. “A man, who was the driver of the one of the vehicles was treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to University Hospital Coventry[3] and Warwickshire[4]. A woman, who was a passenger in the same vehicle, was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to the same hospital.

“A man, who was also a driver, was treated for minor injuries before being taken to George Elliot Hospital.”

Warwickshire Police[5] confirmed to CoventryLive that they are investigating the collision as the van driver reportedly fled from the scene. They have launched a witness appeal in a bid to identify him and also speak to anyone who saw what happened prior to the collision itself. “Any witnesses, anyone with dashcam footage or anyone with info can go online[6] or call 101 quoting incident number 247 on December 12,” a Warwickshire Police[7] spokesman said.

“Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
