Walking frame and clothing scattered across road after woman, 92, hit by car

A walking frame and items of clothing were scattered across a busy junction after a woman was hit by a car. Merseyside Police[1] closed Canning Street at the junction with Catherine Street in the city’s Georgian Quarter[2] this evening, Sunday, December 3 after the crash. A blue Ford Focus and a 92-year-old female pedestrian were involved in the incident at around 5.55pm.

A Merseyside Police[3] spokesperson told the ECHO[4] the woman sustained serious injuries and her condition is described as critical. The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting with the investigation, the force added.

One woman, who was visiting a friend who lives on Canning Street[7], told the ECHO[8]: “My friend came out to look for the takeaway and saw her.

He came running back in to get his shoes and told me to ring an ambulance. It was an elderly lady with a Zimmer frame. “I came running out with no shoes on while on the phone.

The police response was massive.” The woman, who was from Wirral[9] but did not want to give her name, added: “It’s a really bad junction. It needs a pedestrian crossing – it really does.

The amount of times you have to wait for the signal to change and the cars to empty out before crossing is scary. This is all really sad.” When the ECHO[10] arrived at the scene shortly after 7pm, there was a huge emergency services response including Merseyside Police[11], Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service[12] and North West Ambulance Service[13].

A large fire service tent had also been erected around the Ford Focus and a section of road. After the tent was removed, a pile of debris including a walking frame and pieces of clothing could be seen. Several cars and out of service buses, not involved in the incident, were also inside the cordon.

The vehicles were allowed to drive out of the large cordon following the tent’s removal. Another eyewitness told the ECHO how it was “worrying to see so many incidents happen on the road”. He referred to another incident which happened on Friday, November 24, where a man fell from an electric scooter.[14][15]

The emergency response was scaled down at around 8pm tonight.

Several officers from Merseyside Police’s Road Policing Unit[16] remained to carry out forensic examinations at the scene. Officers could be seen taking photographs of the scene and conducting house-to-house enquiries. Road closures remain in place and pedestrians and drivers are asked to avoid the area.

The closures are at Canning Street and the junction of Hope Street; Catharine Street at the junction of Faulkner Street; Canning Street at the junction of Bedford Road South and Canning Street at the junction of Huskisson Street. A police officer at the scene told the ECHO he expected the road to be closed “for at least six hours”. Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have dashcam footage, is asked to contact the Roads Policing Team on 0151 777 5747, email [email protected][17], or DM @MerPolTraffic on Twitter quoting log 0666 of 3 December.
