Watchdog’s full statements after two police chase crashes in Nottinghamshire in three days

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has issued a response after two police chase crashes in Nottinghamshire this week. The watchdog for the police has been informed of both incidents, with Nottinghamshire Police referring both incidents. The first incident happened on Wednesday (December 13) when a man died after he was involved in a collision on the A60 Huntingdon Street[1], Nottingham.

It happened in the early hours of the morning, with the pedestrian treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene. The crash involved a vehicle which was being chased by police officers, and a man has since been arrested in connection with the incident. An IOPC spokesperson said: “The Independent Office for Police[2] Conduct has started an investigation into the police pursuit prior to a collision in Nottingham[3] City Centre[4] early on Wednesday (13 December).

Let us know[5] “It follows a mandatory referral from Nottinghamshire Police after one of its vehicles was involved in a pursuit with a Ford Focus on the A60 Huntingdon Street. We understand that the Focus initially came to the attention of police at about 3.10am but officers lost sight of it.

A pursuit began when officers in another vehicle spotted the Focus, which subsequently collided with a male pedestrian shortly after 3.20am.” They added: “The man was treated by paramedics but has sadly died. After we were notified by the force, we sent our investigators to the police post-incident process and scene to begin gathering information, including initial accounts from the officers involved and other police witnesses.

“We are also gathering police dashcam and body worn video footage. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident”. Another collision took place on Friday, December 15 in Carlton[6].

At 12:50am a car collided with the Image Hair Fashions building on the corner of Willow Road and Burton Road. This car was also being chased by police. Following the incident, a 49-year-old was taken to hospital and also arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving and driving when unfit through alcohol or drugs.

An IOPC spokesperson has stated: “We can confirm we have received a referral from Nottinghamshire Police concerning an incident in St Ann’s in the early hours of this morning.

The referral will be assessed to determine whether any action is required by the IOPC.”
