Weather warning for snow in place for parts of Derbyshire

Weather experts at the Met Office have issued a yellow level weather warning for snow[1] covering parts of Derbyshire as some areas of high ground could see 2-5cms of snow – maybe more. The warning is in place until midday on Monday, December 4. It comes after parts of the UK were covered in snow over the weekend.

Rain will likely fall as snow to relatively low levels for a time this evening and at first tonight across parts of northern England, giving a few cms of additional cover locally. The Met Office states: “Snow should become confined to the higher parts of northern and central Wales, as well as northern England with time, leading to accumulations of 2-5 cm on some roads above around 150 m, and perhaps 10-15 cm on roads above around 350m. Snow will die out from the north through Monday.”

People are being urged to keep themselves and others safe by planning their route, and giving themselves extra time for their journey. Some roads and railways are likely to be affected by the weather with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. The warning comes at the same time as a warning for ice running for the same length of time.

The snow warning covers much of north Derbyshire – particularly the High Peak area and parts of the Derbyshire Dales. Derbyshire County Council has said all gritting routes across the county have been treated again this afternoon in preparation for another cold night ahead and further snow forecast in the Peak District. Gritting crews will be out from midnight patrolling in the Peak area, carrying out further gritting and ploughing snow as necessary.

A6187 Winnats Pass in Castleton remains closed due to a vehicle which became stuck.

Tomorrow morning is expected to bring rain on lower ground with sleet and snow continuing on higher routes.

Road surface temperatures are expected to remain below zero bringing the risk of ice.
