When is the cold snap going to end in Greater Manchester?
Temperatures are set to return to average this week after a cold snap swept the UK, including Greater Manchester. A light sprinkling of snow fell in many parts of our region on Saturday afternoon and evening, with temperatures several degrees below freezing overnight. More snow fell on Sunday afternoon and into Sunday night.
Snow and ice warnings issued by the Met Office across Greater Manchester remain in place today. The yellow ice warning covers most of our region as well as much of the north of England. It came into force at 5pm last night and will remain in place until midday.
The yellow snow warning covers mainly hilly areas[3] in the east of Rochdale[4], Oldham[5] and Bury[6]. It was issued at 8pm last night and runs until noon today. In the areas covered by the snow warning, forecasters warned up to 15cm of snow could fall on higher ground overnight.
But temperatures are predicted to become milder by the end of the week – although conditions will be wet and windy. The average maximum temperature for Greater Manchester in December is 7.18C, according to the Met Office. The average lows are of 1.50C.

The Met Office’s forecast for Tuesday states the maximum temperature will be 6C, adding: “A showery start to the day, but turning drier albeit staying mainly cloudy.
Turning a bit brighter during the afternoon with sunny intervals developing. Winds easing, but feeling quite cold.” Join our WhatsApp Top Stories and Breaking News group by clicking this link[7]
The outlook for Wednesday to Friday said: “Frost and patchy freezing fog clearing on Wednesday leaving some sunshine. Rain is likely by the evening, preceded by hill snow. Milder, wetter and much windier to end the week.”
Temperatures across Greater Manchester will even stretch to double figures on Saturday with highs of 10C and lows of 6C predicted. However there will be lots of heavy rain. Sunday will start out wet, clearing up for some sunny intervals in the afternoon.
There will be highs of 9C and lows yet again of 6C.
