Witness filmed Michael Schumacher’s life-changing skiing accident on his phone

The horror skiing accident of F1 icon Michael Schumacher[1] 10 years ago was caught on camera by an unsuspecting eyewitness. The German legend suffered a traumatic head injury at a ski resort[2] in the French Alps back in December 2013 when he fell and hit his head on a rock. Schumacher, 54, was subsequently airlifted to a hospital where he spent over a year in a coma.

The former racer was wearing a helmet-mounted camera while skiing which investigators hoped would help them at the time as well as footage of the accident that was fortuitously filmed by an eyewitness. The 35-year-old German steward said he was filming his girlfriend on the slopes when he accidentally captured the fateful moment that Schumacher fell. In the harrowing footage, a skier can be seen going down an unmarked run between two groomed pistes before falling, which was reported by news magazine Der Spiegel[7]. The magazine spoke to the witness 10 years ago who said the seven-time world champion was travelling at a "leisurely" pace, adding that he was descending down the slopes at "a maximum speed of 20 kilometres an hour".

It's a decade to the day (December 29) since the accident which changed the trajectory of the Schumacher family, including his wife Corinna, and two children Gina-Maria, and Mick, with the latter following in his father's footsteps by becoming an F1 driver. Corinna, who has been married to the F1 icon since 1995, has shielded her husband from the media over the past decade with little information about his condition being released.

Schumacher's brother, Ralf, recently spoke about the condition of his older sibling, admitting that he misses how he used to be[9].

"I miss the Michael of the old days," the 48-year-old said. "Life is unfair from time to time. Michael was very lucky throughout his life. But then there was this tragic accident.

Fortunately, advanced medical science provides many opportunities.

However, nothing is like it used to be."
