Woman ‘fails breath test’ as multiple motorists accused of illegal driving

Police have revealed they detained a woman suspected of drink-driving as they revealed details of the latest stage of their Christmas drink-driving campaign. Warwickshire Police are ramping up patrols across the county to target and arrest suspected drink and drug drivers over the festive period. Three recent crashes have led to drink-drive accusations being levelled against defendants.

Now officers have released details of these and several other cases they have been involved with. On December 4 in Dark Lane, Bedworth, police attended after receiving a phone call about a suspected drink driver. A 41-year-old woman from Bedworth was arrested at 5.35pm.

Officers spoke to the woman and allege that she failed a breath test before being arrested. She has since been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries. Three crashes led to arrests.

In one, a 26-year-old man from Atherstone was arrested at 10pm on December 3 on suspicion of drink driving after police were called to a crash where a car had collided with a tree on Coleshill Road, Atherstone. The driver was located nearby and allegedly failed a roadside breath test. He was later charged with drink driving to appear before Warwickshire magistrates on January 19, 2024.

In another incident, a 26-year-old man from Nuneaton was arrested at 12.25am on December 6 in Donnithorne Avenue, Nuneaton on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs. That came after police were called to a collision on Heart of England Way, Nuneaton. Officers arrived and the 26-year-old man was spoken to.

He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and for allegedly failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis and has been released on police bail pending further investigation. In the third collision, a 34-year-old man from Thamesmead in London was arrested at 11pm on December 7 on suspicion of drink driving when police were called to a collision where a vehicle had collided with a telegraph pole. The pole was snapped in half, causing the cables to drop onto the road on the B4452 near Ufton.

Part of the pole also hit another motorist's vehicle, causing damage. The driver was located nearby and allegedly failed a roadside breath test. He was later charged with drink driving to appear before Warwickshire magistrates on January 26, 2024.

Officers have also released details of three cases where motorists have been accused of drug-driving. In one case, a 32-year-old woman from Wellesbourne, Warwick was arrested at 3.10pm on December 3 on suspicion of drug driving on the Birmingham Road near Wilmcote, Stratford-upon-Avon. It came after police stopped her vehicle and she allegedly failed a roadside drug swipe.

She was later released on bail pending further enquiries. In another in Nuneaton, a 57-year-old man from Nuneaton was arrested at 11.40pm on December 3 on suspicion of drug driving on Green Lane, Nuneaton when his car was stopped for an alleged moving traffic offence. He allegedly failed a roadside drug swipe and was arrested.

He was later released on police bail pending further enquiries. On the A46, a 19-year-old man from Kenilworth was arrested at 10.05pm on December 6 on suspicion of drug driving. He is due to answer bail in the New Year.

Finally, in another case, a 38-year-old man from Wolverhampton was arrested at 2.55am on December 7 in Hampton Lane, Meriden after officers found him sitting in his car. He allegedly refused to provide a breath test and was arrested and later charged with this to appear before Warwickshire Magistrates on January 26, 2024. Sergeant Simon Dalby who is leading the operation this Christmas, said "Officers across Warwickshire are actively looking to arrest suspected drink and drug drivers so the chance of being caught if you choose to drink or take illegal drugs and drive is high.

There are no excuses.

If you are going out drinking, please plan ahead and book a taxi or choose a location within walking distance of home."
