Young Johnstone man with cerebral palsy defies condition to chase his dream job

A young man who suffers from cerebral palsy[1] has refused to let his condition get in the way of him following his dream. Kyle Gunn was born with the condition that affects his ability to move and maintain balance and posture. He has used a wheelchair since he can remember, and lives in Johnstone[2] with his parents.

The 26-year-old sometimes struggles to get out of bed in the mornings due to being unable to ‘move very well’. However, he has not let his condition stop him from doing what he loves – writing.

The St Mirren supporter has written for publications including The Scottish Sun and Paisley Daily Express, as well as our sister title The Daily Record.

Freelance journalist Kyle has combined his passion for football and writing to become a sports reporter, and is often travelling to sporting events and has even interviewed big names including Scotland international and Aston Villa captain John McGinn. Reflecting on his chosen career path, Kyle said: “I enjoy watching football and I was good at English in school so I combined those two things together and got into sports journalism which I really like. “I’ve grown up watching football so writing about it is an honour. It’s not been without its challenges, one of which is not being able to do shorthand so everywhere I go, I need to record it. “When I’ve been out on jobs, people have been very supportive.

They have been really patient with me.”

He added: “My parents are a big support to me and I am so grateful for them. You’ve got to do what you want to do even if you have cerebral palsy.

“Whatever disability you have, there are always opportunities out there for you.”
