4 killed, 1 injured in hot air balloon crash in Arizona desert

ELOY, Ariz. (TND) — Four people were killed and one person was critically injured when a hot air balloon crash-landed in the desert of Eloy, Arizona Sunday, according to the Eloy Police Department. Police said the crash happened around 7:50 a.m. in the desert area east of Sunshine Boulevard and Hanna Road. The mayor of Eloy confirmed that 13 people — eight skydivers, four passengers and a pilot — were in the balloon at the time of the crash, KNXV[1] reported.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

NTSB reported the balloon crashed after an unspecified problem with the envelope, according to KNXV.

The identity of the victims has not been released.
