9 injured by driver fleeing police blocks away from Times Square’s New Year’s Eve festivities
Nine people were injured in Manhattan early Monday morning when a driver trying to escape police struck them just blocks away from the Times Square New Year’s Eve festivities. Detectives said the 44-year-old man drove away to escape after officers responding to a crime on the corner of 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue attempted to arrest him, CBS News reported.[1] He drove in the wrong direction down 34th Street, police said, according to the outlet, hitting a number of cars and people as he did so.
Police said all the people who were struck were hospitalized with minor injuries, CBS reported. One police officer was reportedly hospitalized, per the outlet, but it was not clear if he was struck by the car, too. The driver was arrested and taken to the hospital in stable condition, CBS reported.
Sheikh Milon, one of the people who was injured, told the New York Post[2] that he was scared he could have been killed. A witness said the area was clogged with some of the estimated million people at the New Year’s Eve ball drop, according to the Post. The crash occurred near Madison Square Garden and Penn Station.
The Post reported that charges are pending against the unidentified suspect.
